This year the SMART Pupil Council are continuing our hard work in Promoting Children’s Rights and Pupil Voice as part of our Right’s Respecting School Journey. At the start of term all classes focused on four articles, we learned that these particular articles helped inform the adults on how to get it right for every child (GIRFEC). We created new wall displays and shared what we have learned at assemblies. We have identified that we would like to celebrate achievement in Numeracy alongside our certificates for Star Writer, Values, STEM, Reading School and Digital. So far this year during our fortnightly meetings, the SMART Pupil Council have identified that they would like a new school show. They wrote a letter persuading Mrs Greechan to permit us to buy one and we were successful. Using our class meeting tool, where every child gets a voice, the children have chosen our next Spring Show. They have also shared their ideas on how to make playtimes and lunchtimes more fun. The children also chose which school clubs they would like the teachers to deliver, alongside the different events for the fun day. We are enjoying having a voice within our school and we hope to continue to ensure that our school is a place where we can enjoy learning and work together as a community.<\/p>\n

Last year, we consulted the views of parents on a variety of issues and asked for the opinions.<\/p>\n

Here are some of the changes that we made.<\/p>\n

The Smart Pupil Council noticeboard is regularly updated to display what each pupil voice committee is working on.<\/p>\n

During the month of September, the Smart Pupil Council asked all class to discuss and suggest improvements can be made at playtime and lunchtime.\u00a0 All classes recorded their views.<\/p>\n

In October, they set a class meeting to seek the views of the children of what they would like this year\u2019s school show to be.\u00a0 They met to discuss the results. They announced to the children over the school tannoid that our school show this academic year will be Matilda!<\/p>\n

They also discussed the results of the last class meeting they set. They asked the view of the children of what resources they would like to have in the playground to make playtime better. They worked together to make a shopping list of different resources that would enhance their playtime.<\/p>\n

St Michael\u2019s Primary are extremely fortunate to have a wonderful SMART Pupil Council who meet on a fortnightly basis to discuss ways in which we can improve our school. The children identified that we would benefit from a school house system and through consultation with their classes they selected the houses to be named after Pilgrimage Destinations. All children and staff have been placed into a house, we have ensured that siblings remain in the same house.<\/p>\n

There are many great benefits of a house system and we hope it will foster a strong sense of belonging, community, and identity, promoting leadership and life skills (like teamwork, responsibility, and independence) through inter-house competitions and collaboration across age groups, and boosting engagement, motivation, and positive behaviour by offering diverse ways to earn points and achieve recognition, enhancing the overall school culture.<\/p>\n

Our Primary 7 and Primary 6 children were given the opportunity to apply to become House Captain and Vice House Captain, where they will work in partnership with our House Leaders. We are delighted to announce our successful candidates<\/p>\n
