Drama

DramaThe drama department at St.Margaret’s High School allows all pupils, S1-S6 to access a creative curriculum that develops skills through drama education many of which can be transferrable to other areas of school life.

The drama department is made up of:

Mrs C Hunter
Mrs M Nisbet
Mrs L McLean

We offer drama for BGE (S1, S2 & S3) and SQA certificated classes for senior phase pupils. Learners can access National 5 and Higher courses in drama both of which involve practical exams and a written paper.

National 5
Pupils from S4 onwards can select to study the National 5 drama course which involves a practical exam (60%) and a written paper (40%). A selection of candidates will present in front of a visiting SQA examiner which is conducted in collaboration with drama teachers within the department. The remaining pupils then present to internal staff and are marked using the visiting assessors marks for guidance.
The course allows pupils to explore one script that they must learn and perform as their practical exam, this is done in small groups or pairs.
The written element of the course requires pupils to reflect on the rehearsal process leading to the practical exam, the play their script is from, their performance and the performance of their partner/group member.

Higher
Pupils from S5 onwards can select to study the Higher drama course which involves a practical exam and a written paper. All pupils present in front of a visiting SQA examiner. The course allows pupils to explore multiple texts and conduct play analysis. Pupils will present 2 pieces to the visiting examiner this again is done in small groups or pairs.
The written element of the course requires pupils to answer questions based on one text they have studied in class and another which they would usually go and see in a live production. The school now have access to various digital resources which allows pupils to experience a live theatre production but also rewatch sections and gain a deeper understanding. Visiting theatre in person has been effected by covid-19 but the department does aim to reinstate going to see a live production when the school is able to facilitate this.
