February in Primary 2/3 🌟

Welcome!

What a fantastic and busy month we have had in Primary 2/3! We have been working hard across all areas of the curriculum and are so proud of the effort everyone has been putting into their learning.

πŸ“š Literacy

In Spelling and Phonics, we have continued learning new phonemes through a range of engaging strategies within our working groups. We have also been enjoying a variety of reading books and recently assessed our reading stages after the New Year. Everyone has been challenging themselves to keep up their reading at home too, helping to build fluency and confidence through consistency β€” well done!

βž• Mathematics and Numeracy

In Maths and Numeracy, we have been developing our understanding of Money, Time, and the Properties of 2D and 3D Objects. We have been exploring coins, calculating totals, telling the time, and identifying features of different shapes. Super effort all round!

🏴 Scotland Topic

Earlier this month, we explored our Scotland topic. We learned about Scottish symbols such as the tartan, thistle and the Scottish flag. We were introduced to Katie Morag and enjoyed learning about island life. We also discovered more about Robert Burns and celebrated Burns Night.

Our learning also included Scottish landscapes (mountains and lochs), Scottish weather, kilts, music and dance, and traditional Scottish food.

We have now moved on to comparing Scotland with Australia. So far, we have explored Australian symbols such as the flag, Australian animals, weather and seasons, and school life in Australia. We are excited to continue learning more about Australia as we move into March!

✝️ Religious Education

In RE, we have been learning about the Sacrament of Reconciliation. A special mention to our five Primary 3 pupils who made the Sacrament of Reconciliation on the 10th of February β€” they were wonderful role models for our Primary 2 pupils who will receive this sacrament next year.

We have also been learning about Mass, Lent and Eastertide. Our learning has included the different areas of the church, parts of the Mass, symbols used in church, and understanding what Lent is. We have been thinking about prayer during Lent and Jesus’ journey, and we are looking forward to learning about Easter Sunday, Easter joy and new life at Easter.

🏐 Physical Education

In PE, we have continued our central net and ball topic. We have been developing our catching and returning skills, accuracy and aim, and simple rallying. We have worked in small groups to create target team games and have now moved on to possession games β€” focusing on keeping control of the ball, passing to a partner, moving into space, and working as a team in small-sided games.

πŸ’› Health and Wellbeing

In Health and Wellbeing, we have been focusing on the Emotion Works programme, particularly the β€œEmotion Words” and β€œTriggers” cogs. We have been learning to name basic emotions, recognise emotions in ourselves and others, notice body feelings, understand triggers, and practise simple calming strategies.

πŸŽ‰ February Fun

We also celebrated Crazy Hair Day this month β€” and with it being dress down day too, Primary 2/3 absolutely loved it! It was wonderful to see so many creative hairstyles and smiling faces.

Thank you for reading about our fabulous February learning. We can’t wait to share even more exciting updates in our next Primary 2/3 blog! 🌟
