We have been looking at current news items about a mission called ‘Mars One,’ which plans to send 4 humans to Mars in the year 2023!

We watched a video to find out why Mars is a place where humans might be able to live…

We took notes and added them to a group visualiser. Our note-taking skills are really improving…

We added our learning about Mars onto our PowerPoints in the ICT suite. We can add pictures, use animations, change fonts and add backgrounds to our slides…

Many people have applied to go to Mars in 2023 even though they can never, ever come back to Earth! We had a class discussion about this. We talked about what you would have to leave behind, why humans want to go to Mars and whether or not we agreed with the mission:

Ami said that Earth is our planet and that we should leave Mars alone because it doesn’t belong to us.

Jake said that we have caused lots of destruction on Earth and we will only do the same to Mars

Carlo said we need to explore Mars because Earth might one day be destroyed by war or disease

Ellie said Earth might run out of space for people so we need to explore other planets

Wow! Mrs McLean never even thought of that!

We decided to take a class survey about what item we would take with us if we were to go on a one-way trip to Mars. The options were: family; friends; a TV; a PS4 or a lifetime’s supply of sweets.

We worked as a class to create a human bar graph with scale that showed the results of our survey…

Sorry family and friends but the most popular option was… sweets!

We learned that a bar graph needs a title, a horizontal axis, a vertical axis, labels and a scale. We worked in groups to create our own version of a human bar graph…

Finally, as St. Andrew’s day is fast approaching, we have been learning all about his story this week. We dramatised his story using role play…

We learned about his death on an X shaped cross and we know that we are reminded of St. Andrew every time we see a Scottish Saltire. Here are some Saltires that we made for our St. Andrew’s Day bunting…

That’s all for now. Mrs McLean is excited because tomorrow we begin delivering our homework projects on an aspect of the Solar System. Watch out for pics of our amazing work!

This week we have been learning all about the planet Mars.
