It’s Monday, the beginning of a new week and of a new month.<\/p>\n

Magnus was beating me at Connect 4 during Goldentime on Friday, but I accidentally knocked over the game before we could finish. So sad. \ud83d\ude22\ud83d\ude02\ud83d\ude22<\/p>\n

June is important for a lot of reasons. It’s the middle of the year which means that 2020 is nearly half over already and the name ‘June’ may come from the latin word ‘iuniores’, meaning ‘younger ones’, like you.<\/p>\n

Just think a whole month devoted to young people. Those Romans were pretty great (apart from all the slavery and murder and persecution and conquest and stuff).<\/p>\n

  8. A shop sells 6 green apples for 75p and 10 red apples for 90p. Jason bought some bags of green apples and some bags of red apples. He spent \u00a34.20. How many bags of each type of apples did he buy?<\/li>\n
  9. A car boot sale charges an entrance fee of 50p for adults and 30p for children. 100 adults and 80 children pay to go in. How much money do they pay altogether?<\/li>\n
  10. 250,000 people visited a theme park in one year. 15% of the people visited in April and 40% of the people visited in August. How many people visited the park in the rest of the year?<\/li>\n
  11. Cheddar cheese costs \u00a37.50 for 1kg. Marie buys 200 grams of cheddar cheese. How much does she pay?<\/li>\n
  12. Cream cheese costs \u00a33.60 for 1kg. Robbie buys a pot of cream cheese for 90p. How many grams of cream cheese does he buy?<\/li>\n
  13. 30 children are going on a trip. It costs \u00a35 including lunch. Some children take their own packed lunch. They pay only \u00a33. The 30 children pay a total of \u00a3110. How many children are taking their own packed lunch?<\/li>\n
  14. A packet contains 1.5 kilograms of guinea pig food. Remi feeds her guinea pig 30 grams of food each day. How many days does the packet of food last?<\/li>\n
  15. Every 100g of brown bread contains 6g of fibre. A loaf of bread weights 800g and has 20 equal slices. How much fibre is there in one slice?<\/li>\n
  16. A box contains 220 matches and weights 45 grams. The empty box weights 23 grams. Calculate the weight of one match.<\/li>\n
  17. The cost for using a minibus is \u00a31.36 for each kilometre. 8 friends go on a 114 kilometre journey. How much does each person pay?<\/li>\n
  18. A farmer has \u00a31200 to buy apple trees and pear trees. Apple trees cost \u00a324.75 each. Pear trees cost \u00a312.50 each. He buys 35 apple trees. How many pear trees can he buy with the money he has left?<\/li>\n
  19. A school buys some yo-yos as prizes. The yo-yos cost \u00a34.25 each. The school has \u00a340 to spend on prizes. They buy as many yo-yos as they cab. How much money is left?<\/li>\n
  20. In a class, 18 of the children are girls. A quarter of the children in the class are boys. Altogether, how many children are there in the class?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Remember, decimals make no difference to how you add, subtract, multiply or divide you only have to remember to keep the decimal points above one another, in a straight line.<\/p>\n

    This is\u00a0not<\/span>\u00a0how we would write out sums to find the answer so don\u2019t write them this way in your jotter. Use place value, carrying and decomposition (borrowing) to find your answers.<\/p>\n

    For spelling this week I want to look at another spelling rule.<\/p>\n

    The sound ‘sh’ represented by ‘ci’.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Some words use ‘ti’ to make ‘sh’. Words like station, nation or education.<\/p>\n

    When a longer word is formed from a root word, however, the ‘sh’ sound is represented by ‘ci’.<\/p>\n

    Copy these words into your jotter and practise them in any way that you choose:<\/p>\n

    music – musician<\/p>\n

    space – spacious<\/p>\n

    finance – financial<\/p>\n

    optic – optician<\/p>\n

    office – official<\/p>\n

    suffice – sufficient<\/p>\n

    face – facial<\/p>\n

    grace – gracious<\/p>\n

    tactic – tactician<\/p>\n

    electric – electrician<\/p>\n

    I\u2019ve assigned you some reading in Scholastic Books.<\/p>\n

    The Feast of Pentecost \u2013 31 May 2020<\/p>\n

    \u201cThey were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak\u201d<\/p>\n

    \u201cWhen Pentecost day came round, they had all met in one room, when suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind from heaven, the noise of which filled the entire house in which they were sitting; and something appeared to them that seemed like tongues of fire; these separated and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak foreign languages as the Spirit gave them the gift of speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

    The Feast of Pentecost brings to an end the Season of Easter and falls 50 days after Easter Sunday.\u00a0 Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 As we heard in the first reading of how the disciples were all together and how they were afraid now that Jesus had left them.\u00a0 On this day they were given the gift of speaking many different languages so that they could travel far and wide to spread the good news.<\/p>\n

    We learn that God is always here for us, we just need to ask him for help if we are afraid, worried or feeling lonely.\u00a0 He will answer our prayer and help us.\u00a0 Especially in these times when we are feeling sad about not seeing our friends and families like we use to.\u00a0 God will be by our sides to guide us through to better times.<\/p>\n

    Above you will see an image of Pentecost.\u00a0 There are important symbols that are associated with Pentecost \u2013 we can read about them in the extract above from the Acts of the Apostles.\u00a0 \u00a0We also saw Father Campbell in his red vestments when watching Mass yesterday.<\/p>\n

    For today\u2019s task I would like you to design your own Pentecost poster incorporating some of the important symbols of Pentecost.\u00a0 This poster will remind us that the Holy Spirit is with us in everything we do.     Over the weekend hopefully we were all able to go visit a member of our family!\u00a0 This has been something we have taken for granted all of our lives (as we probably did this every weekend or more).\u00a0 From Friday onward this has been a very special time for many.\u00a0 Hopefully your family don\u2019t live too far away and you have been able to spend some time with them.\u00a0 It must have been a great feeling to spend time, in our gardens, with loved ones.<\/p>\n

    How it has lifted all our spirits and given us such a positive boast.\u00a0 If you were able to visit someone you have not seen during Lockdown you will know this feeling.\u00a0 Hopefully it won\u2019t be too much longer until we can see all of our family.<\/p>\n

    Today is also a new month\/season JUNE begins our three months of SUMMER, can you believe it!! This too should make us feel more positive as hopefully we have lovely weather.<\/p>\n

    Being positive makes our world a better place and after all the changes that have happened over the last few months, \u00a0we will begin to see a brighter, happier, and more POSITIVE future ahead.<\/p>\n

    I would like you to take the word POSITIVE and write an acrostic poem.\u00a0 (Remember you take the word POSITIVE and in large letters you write it down the left-hand side of your page and then write a word\/sentence that begins with each letter of POSITIVE).<\/p>\n
