It sits between 20 and 30 on the number line.<\/p>\n<p>These are the closest TENS to 27, but which is closest?<\/p>\n<p>27 is 7 steps away from 20 but only 3 steps away from 30 so if we are rounding to the nearest TEN then 27 is rounded (nearer) to 30.<\/p>\n<p>We say that, &#8220;27 rounded to the nearest ten is 30.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The rule<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">is:-\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">If a number has a <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">1<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">, <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">, <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">3<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">, or <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">4<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"> in its units then we <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">round down<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Examples &#8211; 2<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">4<\/span> rounds down to 20,\u00a0 6<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">1<\/span> rounds down to 60,\u00a0 35<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">3<\/span> rounds down to 350,<\/p>\n<p>27,45<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">1<\/span> rounds down to 27,450<\/p>\n<p>If the number has <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">5<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">6<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">7<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">8<\/span> or <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">9<\/span> in the units then we <span style=\"color: #0000ff\">round up<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Examples &#8211; 5<span style=\"color: #0000ff\">8<\/span> rounds up to 60,\u00a0 6<span style=\"color: #0000ff\">9<\/span> rounds up to 70,\u00a0 39<span style=\"color: #0000ff\">7<\/span> rounds up to 400,<\/p>\n<p>1,45<span style=\"color: #0000ff\">6<\/span> rounds up to 1460,\u00a0 27,30<span style=\"color: #0000ff\">5<\/span> rounds up to 27,310<\/p>\n<p>1.Round these numbers to the nearest 10<\/p>\n<p>a) 46\u00a0 b) 82\u00a0 c)19\u00a0 d) 84<\/p>\n<p>e) 146\u00a0 f) 181\u00a0 g) 219\u00a0 h) 424<\/p>\n<p>i) 65\u00a0 j) 195\u00a0 k) 203\u00a0 l) 888<\/p>\n<p>2.There were 137 pupils at the school dance.
