St Gilbert

Saint Gilbert was a Bishop of Caithness in the 13th century. He was born in Morayshire of a noble family and was educated abroad.

On his return from travelling through Germany, Italy and France, Gilbert entered the church in his native land of Scotland. He soon became Archdeacon of Moray as a result of his learning and acquired knowledge. He is said to have been one of the most pious, learned and accomplished prelates of his time.

St Gilbert translated the Psalms and Gospels into the Gaelic language.

Gilbert was a strenuous defender of the rights of the Catholic Church in Scotland. He established several hospices for the poor and became known as a fine preacher.  He became Bishop of Caithness in 1222 and was the founder of Dornoch Cathedral. He was also the founder of St Peter’s in Thurso. The first service in Dornoch Cathedral was held in 1239. The medieval masonry of the chancel and the crossing piers of Dornoch Cathedral remain mostly intact today. Parts of the Cathedral have been rebuilt. The stained glass windows in existence today include the St Gilbert Window (1989).

Gilbert died on 1st April 1245 and was canonised after his death. He was interred in the Cathedral at Dornoch and his relics were venerated for many years afterwards.
