PURPOSE AND AUDIENCE –
The purpose of this text is to inform/persuade/discuss/entertain. I know this because (quote and explain)

UNDERSTANDING –
Write a summary of the main points in your own words as much as possible.
LANGUAGE –
Word Choice: Quote word from the text – Denotation (What the word means) – Connotations (Why the author has used this word)
For example: “Disaster” – A calamitous event – The author described the party as a ‘disaster’ because everything went wrong and people were very ill.
Imagery: Identify and explain Similes/Metaphors/Alliteration/Hyperbole
For example:
- Identify – Simile “The girl ran as fast as a Cheetah”
- Explain – Just as a Cheetah is one of the fastest animals in the world so too is the girl one of the fastest in her class.
Sentence Structure: Identify and explain length/list/punctuation or order
For example:
- A List “Studying, clubs… time with friends” – This list is used to show the amount of things that young people are expected to do with their limited free time.
STYLE – Identify and explain the style (formal/informal/imaginative/discursive/persuasive etc)
EVALUATION – Answer the following questions in full
- Has the writer achieved the purpose?
- What have you learned?
- What is your personal response to the article?
