They learn about human achievements and to make sense of changes in society, conflicts and environmental issues. With greater understanding comes the opportunity to influence events by exercising informed and responsible citizenship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Learning in the social studies will enable children to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">develop understanding of the history, heritage and culture of Scotland, and an appreciation of local and national heritage within the world<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">broaden understanding of the world by learning about human activities and achievements in the past and present<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">develop understanding of their own values, beliefs and cultures and those of others<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">develop understanding of the principles of democracy and citizenship through experiences of critical and independent thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">explore and evaluate different types of sources and evidence<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">learn how to locate, explore and link periods, people and events in time and place<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">learn how to locate, explore and link features and places locally and further afield<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">engage in activities which encourage enterprising attitudes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">develop an understanding of concepts that stimulate enterprise and influence business<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">establish firm foundations for lifelong learning and for further specialised study and careers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Social studies includes experiences and outcomes in historical and geographical, social, political, economic and business contexts.
