{"id":109,"date":"2015-06-19T09:39:32","date_gmt":"2015-06-19T09:39:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/nl\/anntest3\/?page_id=109"},"modified":"2020-04-02T13:56:24","modified_gmt":"2020-04-02T13:56:24","slug":"numeracy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/nl\/sikeside\/numeracy\/","title":{"rendered":"Numeracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Mathematics (numeracy)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Learning in mathematics enables children to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">develop a secure understanding of the concepts, principles and processes of mathematics and apply these in different contexts, including the world of work<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">engage with more abstract mathematical concepts and develop important new kinds of thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">understand the application of mathematics, its impact on our society past and present, and its potential for the future<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">develop essential numeracy skills which will allow them to participate fully in society<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">establish firm foundations for further specialist learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">understand that successful independent living requires financial awareness, effective money management, using schedules and other related skills<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">interpret numerical information appropriately and use it to draw conclusions, assess risk, and make reasoned evaluations and informed decisions<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">apply skills and understanding creatively and logically to solve problems, within a variety of contexts<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">appreciate how the imaginative and effective use of technologies can enhance the development of skills and concepts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Teachers use a variety of resources to plan their lessons i.e. websites (internet),\u00a0 Big Maths, Scottish Heinemann, Teejay, Sum Dog, Number Talks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">All planning and progression will follow guidance from Curriculum for Excellence outcomes and experiences<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">We have introduced in 2019 a new number programme called \u2018Big Maths\u2019\u00a0 which will increase agility and\u00a0 ensure children have quick and instant recall of number facts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">To face the challenges of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century, each young person needs to have confidence in using mathematical skills, and Scotland needs both specialist mathematicians and a highly numerate population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (Building the Curriculum 1|)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>What is Big Maths?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Big Maths is a teaching method created by Ben Harding that embraces the richness and power the richness and power of Maths, translating it into simple sequential Steps and Progress Drives that make progress in Maths easy and fun for both children and teachers.\u00a0 It is a simple but highly effective way to significantly strengthen your whole school numeracy journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Big Maths provides a rigorous, systematic and structured approach and is based upon the principle that there are 4 core skills that lie at the heart of all Numeracy.
