On the way they encounter several obstacles that have to be overcome. After working out how to cross deep and wide ditches they have to outrun monstrous beasts called Kalidahs, only to find their path blocked by a wide fast flowing river.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000\">Have a think ..<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1684 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/nl\/public\/schliboz\/uploads\/sites\/39573\/2022\/08\/05103640\/Toto-grey-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"118\" height=\"166\" \/>Take a moment to think about these questions:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Why do you think the huge ditches are there?<\/p>\n<p>The Scarecrow says he needs brains, the Tin Woodman says he needs a heart and the Lion says he needs courage. After reading this chapter, what is your opinion of what they want?<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy and her friends have a few problems which they have to solve. Have you and your friends ever solved a problem together?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000\">Focus on the Kalidahs<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Kalidahs are huge, monstrous beasts with bodies like bears, heads like tigers and claws and fangs so sharp they could tear the Lion in two.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000\">Find out more\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>L. Frank Baum did not want <em>The Wonderful Wizard of Oz<\/em> to be scary for children, even the Kalidahs. So this is how the illustrator, W.W. Denslow, drew the creatures.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1702\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/nl\/public\/schliboz\/uploads\/sites\/39573\/2022\/08\/12185305\/Capture.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"302\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can try making your own version of a kalidah at a website called <a href=\"https:\/\/switchzoo.com\/zoo.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Switch Zoo<\/a>, \u00a0which is a brilliant website that lets you mix and match animals to make your own weird creatures.<\/p>\n<p>Another well known non-scary monster is <em>The Gruffalo<\/em> by Julia Donaldson.
