Well, Kansas is part of the United States of America. Try this US States Map game to work out where Kansas is.

Dorothy lives with her Aunt Em, who was

“thin and gaunt, and never smiled”

and Uncle Henry, who was

“stern and solemn, and rarely spoke”

Dorothy is about to be whisked away from everything she knows in Kansas to a new place. Many of you will know that new places can seem a bit scary, but sharing how you feel can help.

Kansas is known as The Sunflower State, so why not try drawing a sunflower. Make the petals big and write your thoughts onto the petals. You can see some easy sunflower outlines here.

  1. My three thoughts are
    1. it is a small town
    2. they do not live in a fancy house and are not rich
    3. it must be hard for Dorothy living with Auntie Em and Unlcle Henry as they are both grumpy

  2. Hi, I think it was a good start to the book, it was interesting to read and I think it will be a good book. I think they must have other animals apart from Toto because it mentioned them living on a farm.

  3. My thoughts are
    1. It sounds like a very small house
    2. Her Uncle and Aunt are very grumpy and strict so it must be hard for Dorothy to not be bored
    3. Toto is very cute

  4. My four thoughts on the book are:
    1. The house they live in is very cramped.
2.Their house was isolated from other houses.
3.They lived in quite a depressing area.
4.Her auntie and uncle were grumpy all the time.

  5. these are my 3 thoughts

    1. Her aunt and uncle are really grumpy and boring

    2. she must live in a very boring and dark place

3.there house is very small and cramped

  6. My thoughts are
1.Dorothy is the only colourful character in their small dull town.
2.Nobody lives near them so that would mean nobody to socialise with , I think it is this that makes Aunt Em and Uncle Henry so dull.
3.Dorothy’s life must be hard because it says ‘Dorothy who was an orphan’ so Her parents must have died when she was younger.

  7. I really liked chapter one it seems when aunt em moved to the Country side she felt lonely and the life in her was slowly slipping away

  8. I like the book so far. My thoughts on chapter one are, Aunt Em and Uncle Henry are probably lonely and sad because they live in the middle of nowhere, so have nobody to talk to. I think Kansas sounds like a depressing place to live, the way it is described as being grey and dull. I don’t know how Dorothy manages to stay to happy and bright, living in a place like that and being an orphan.

  9. My three thoughts are:
    1. Her aunt and uncle are very grumpy and boring.
    2. I thought Dorothy would be older.
    3. Seems like a rubbish house.

    thank you
