School Librarians

A school librarian is responsible for the school’s physical and digital learning space where reading, inquiry, research, thinking, imagination, and creativity are central to teaching and learning.

IFLA School Library Guidelines, 2nd edition, 2015

A professionally qualified school librarian is an invaluable member of staff. Some people would assume this role is all to do with books, and reading for pleasure is certainly an important part of the role, as you can see from this project, The School Librarians’ Guide to Oz.

However, school librarians are also involved with information literacy, interdisciplinary learning, health and wellbeing, creativity, transition projects, Developing the Young Workforce, and working alongside colleagues to deliver the Curriculum for Excellence. Just as each library reflects its school, so each librarian will support their individual school using their personal interests, as well as their professional skills so that no two school libraries are the same. Many school librarians manage websites and Twitter accounts for you to explore the sorts of activities that happen on a daily basis.
