Help with challenges

This website is full of challenges and things to think about. You’ll find them all in the Exploring Oz menu, all listed by chapter.

We know you probably don’t have lots of craft materials around your house, but use your imagination – what can you use instead? Could you twist the challenge to something you do have materials for? Could you make something online? Or maybe you could even make a challenge for someone else?

Whatever materials you find, please check that you can use them first!

If you’re stuck, have a look at some other ideas below. Just remember to be careful at all times.

    • Model materials
      • clean packaging e.g. cereal boxes are great for cardboard
      • natural materials like twigs, leaves, grasses, stones, fir cones etc
      • Lego, Playmobil, play dough or any other building materials around
      • old boxes
    • Music / Sound
      • learn the words to a new song
      • try writing your own song
      • you could collect sounds or make your own sound effects
      • create a playlist of appropriate songs
      • change the lyrics of a song to match the challenge
    •  Photography and film
      • use your phone camera app to edit and play with images
      • recreate a scene from the book
      • make a 5 frame silent film with stills and word frames – you don’t need to animate it unless you’re feeling really adventurous
    • Drawings and artwork of all kinds
      • create a poster
      • design a new book jacket
      • make a word cloud
      • arrange your clothes to make patterns and pictures
    • Creative writing
      • try writing a poem, a script, a short story or a description that fits the challenge
      • organise your writing into a shape
      • try some comic book or graphic novel writing
      • invent new words to describe Oz
      • tell us a joke
    • Movement
      • learn a new dance move
      • suggest a location to visit or explore
      • invent a new game
    • Puzzles
      • make a crossword, or word search
    • Other creative ideas
      • baking – if you have both the ingredients and adult supervision. If you don’t, you can always plan and share recipes and ideas
      • look on Pinterest or YouTube for more inspiration.
