In Chapter 18, Dorothy calls on the Winged Monkeys to help the friends travel across the desert.
Explore these websites and videos to find out more about creatures with wings.
The first flying creatures were insects that looked a lot like dragonflies. Pterosaurs (flying reptiles) evolved 228 million years ago and their fossils have been found all over the world.
The archaeopteryx is one of the earliest creatures that had feathers. Different types of feathers help to control flight, although they can sometimes cause problems too.
Apart from birds, the only other modern creatures that really fly are insects (e.g. bees and wasps, dragonflies, ladybirds) and bats.
Many creatures have evolved to glide from tree to tree in rainforests, like flying squirrels, flying snakes and flying frogs.
