Chapter 14 – The Winged Monkeys

What happens?

Dorothy and her companions try to journey back to the Emerald City but don’t know the way and are soon lost.  They call the Queen of the Field Mice for help and she tells them that if they use the Golden Cap that Dorothy took from the Wicked Witch then the Winged Monkeys will be able to help them.

Have a think ..

Take a moment to think about these questions:

Oz came out of the clouds

Where do you think that Oz actually came from?

What is your opinion of the spell Dorothy uses on the Golden Cap?

Do you think the princess’s plan to drop the monkeys in the river was fair?

Focus on .. navigation

The friends get lost on the way back to Oz because they can’t see the sun to know which direction to go. How much do you know about navigation?

Find out more

Most navigators would use a map and compass to tell them the direction to travel, but your satnav and your mobile use something like GPS.

However, if your battery runs out and you don’t have a compass, you can still navigate using the natural world.

You can even use trees to help you work out what direction you’re facing

Challenge yourself!

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Can you work out which way your front door is facing? For a tougher challenge, can you work out the direction you travel to secondary school?
