More to explore about mythical beasts

L. Frank Baum invented Kalidahs for his Oz books, but many countries in the world have their own mythical beasts. Scotland has loads of them, from selkies and finfolk in the seas, to redcaps in the Borders, trows in Shetland, and the Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui.

One of the most famous is the kelpie or water horse which was the inspiration for the fantastic Kelpies statues in Falkirk.

Kiddle has a list of legendary creatures for you to explore from around the world.

The Whowie is a legend from the Aborigines of Australia, all about a creature that is half-lizard, half-toad.

Challenge yourself!

Can you create your own mythical beast with friends or family? Take a sheet of paper and draw the head of an animal. Pass it to the next family member who will draw the body. Pass it again and the next person will draw the legs. Pass again and the last person will draw the feet. Each person can do more than one body part. Give your new beast a name.

You can also look at the Help with Challenges page to come up with your own mythical beast challenge.
