“Best Class Trip Ever!”

P3 visited Amazonia this morning to round of their Outdoor Learning ‘Into the Wild’ topic.

The class explored the rainforest and were taught about the important role minibeasts play in keeping other animals alive! The children were then given the chance to hold a variety of creepy crawlies, and they proved to be much braver than any of the adults, who seemed much happier taking pictures! Finally, the children were taught an interactive lesson about the layers of the rainforest before taking a trip to the gift shop before heading home.

On leaving the bus, many of the children were overheard saying that it had been “the best class trip ever!” That’s what we like to hear, P3!

Wonderful Wild Work

As part of their ‘Into the Wild’ topic, P3 were set a homework challenge. The pupils were tasked with coming up with a personal project, based on an animal or sport. The children were given the choice over creating a piece of artwork or model, a PowerPoint presentation, a poster or a written booklet.

Mr Innes really couldn’t believe the exceptional standard of homework that the children managed to produce. Great job children, and thanks to all the parents for being so supportive!

A Day out at The Kelpies

Last week, P5/6 and Miss Rangeley visited The Kelpies, as part of their Myths and Legends Interdisciplinary Learning Topic. A grey day couldn’t dampen the children’s spirits, and you can see from the snaps it was a terrific day out!

This topic has been an engaging and memorable one for P5/6, and this visit was a superb way to round it all off! Have a close look at some of the great artwork the class have produced during this study as well as the smiling faces of the pupils, clearly loving their day trip!

Stars in the Making

To celebrate the last Choir Club day of the 2015/16 session, the I.C.T. Suite was turned into a recording studio, with a little help from Mr Innes Snr! The boys and girls recorded a few of their favourite songs from the year and got a little taste of what it would be like to be a recording artist…it was harder work than you might imagine!

Over the next few weeks, Mr Innes (junior and senior!) will be working on mixing a little record, showcasing six months of hard work from our singers, which will be presented to the pupils as a gift early in the new term.

Boys and girls, it has been an absolute pleasure to work with you all this year. I’m already looking forward to making the Choir better than ever next year, with your help of course! – Mr Innes

Out and About!

Our School Choir, along with the winners of our recent Scots Verse Speaking Competition visited the retirement and sheltered housing at Gartlea Gardens. Our talented young performers put on a short show of poetry recital and singing for the residents and staff, who were amazed at the confidence of our children.

This was a wonderful experience for our pupils and the residents at Gartlea Garden really enjoyed playing host on Thursday afternoon. It is always great to be able to take our pupils into the community and the boys and girls always represent in our school in such a positive way.

We are all really proud of you boys and girls.

A Fine Parade

On Thursday morning the pupils of the school were treated to an Easter Bonnet Parade, courtesey of our Nursery Class.

It was clear how much work our boys and girls, and our families had put in to creating these wonderful Easter bonnets! It is always great to see our Nursery Class and older classes come together and it’s always easy to see how much our Nursery children enjoy showing off the hard work they have been doing to their friends in the school!

Talk Like An Egyptian

Our P4 pupils put on a spectacular show this morning, celebrating and sharing their learning from the class’ recent topic: Egypt.

This terrific assembly included:

A host of different facts and information
Some hilarious jokes
Some dramatic ‘video’ performances
A rousing song and dance routine
A dress like a pharaoh competition
A life mummification!

Alliance Francaise!

Over the past three weeks, our P2 and P3 children have been taking part in ‘French Immersion’ lessons, courtesy of Alliance Francaise. The pupils have been working with native French speakers, and have been learning how to use simple greetings, how to follow classroom instructions, how to count and sing and how to recognise colours, all in French! It’s incredible how quickly the children are able to pick up the language, and these lessons have been a big hit with the pupils! In the gallery you can see some of our children practising their speaking with their French sock puppets. C’est excellente!

Helping Hands

Our regular walking expeditions are really beginning to have a positive impact on the health of our pupils, with many of our boys and girls keen to push themselves to walk further and further each time we are out.

As you can see from these pictures, our Nursery Class are also doing a lot of walking at the moment, and it’s always wonderful to see how well our older boys and girls are able to take on the responsibility of looking after our Nursery children.

Young Scientists

This term, Primary 3 have been combining their Outdoor P.E. with Science. The children have been walking to the local park, where they have been looking out for signs of the changing season, clues for wildlife that might be living in the area, and for minibeasts or insects.

The children suggested that we looked for minibeasts in shaded areas, perhaps under rocks. They found a host of interesting minibeasts, and the class were able to identify whether they were insects or not, by examining the tiny creatures closely and counting the number of legs and body segments. When they got back to the classroom, Mr Innes used a Spotter’s Guide to help the class identify the large beetle in the bug viewer as a violet ground beetle (after the children had given their hands a good wash of course!).

World Book Day

We always enjoy celebrating World Book Day at Rochsolloch Primary School. This year, our pupils were given the chance to rotate round three activities, with three different teachers over the course of the day. The pupils were involved in a host of different book themed activities where they were challenged to read, write, talk, listen, make and do. The gallery shows some of our P4-7 pupils working with Mr Flanigan. The children used Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’ as their inspiration as they tried to become witch experts. the experts were then interviewed for the evening news!

This afternoon, two of our quails, Jeff and Blue, moved out of their incubator and into their brand new home! Mrs McLean, assisted by two responsible Primary 7 pupils, transferred the two tiny birds into their brooder box, where they made a bee-line for the shelter of the heat pad.

We now have a total of four quails between the incubator and the brooder box, with more sure to follow soon!

P5/6 Assembly

On Wednesday morning, we were treated to an absolutely incredible assembly, by our P5/6 pupils. The theme of the assembly was America, and it was jam-packed full of entertaining items, including:

* A sketch and a rap about the Civil Rights Movement

* Protests to raise awareness of Autism, and to get rid of homework!

* A terrific song and dance routine of Elvis’ Jailhouse Rock

* Some smashing guitar skills and confident speaking

* A video quiz on the difference between fact and opinion

* Terrific American accents!

We are all so proud of P5/6. The assembly really was first class!

Welcome to the world, Jeff!

Today was an extra special day at Rochsolloch Primary School and Nursery Class, as our very first little quail managed to tap his way out of his egg and into the world. Our first quail is called Jeff.

It’s hard to pick him out in the pictures, but he arrived at 10.50am this morning, and is doing very well indeed! All of the boys and girls were so excited to meet Jeff, with many of our children already having had the opportunity to come round and give their best wishes to the newborn chick! We hope his noisy chirping doesn’t put Mrs McLean off her work!

We are hoping for many more precious little arrivals over the next couple of days.

We are delighted to be keeping you up to date with the important goings on here at Rochsolloch Primary School and Nursery Class.

A Fine Day for a Stroll

On Monday afternoon, P3 hiked to Brownsburn Local Nature Reserve as part of their ‘Into The Wild’ topic. Although the children found that the park is not yet showing any signs of Spring, it was an absolutely glorious day to get some extra exercise, with the pupils pleased to take their weekly walking total well above the 2 mile mark.

The class are already looking forward to returning next week, when they will be looking closely to see if anything has changed as our weather slowly begins to warm up and the plant life gets a few extra precious hours of sunlight.

We are always looking for opportunities to involve our pupils in their school life. At assembly today, our children organised themselves into their ‘Consultation Groups’ and were asked to come up with some potential names for our quail hatchlings!

Each time one of our chicks is born, we’ll pull one of the names from a hat, before officially naming the little quail.
