Physical Education

The Physical Education curriculum at Portland aims to give pupils a chance to learn and take part in meaningful physical activity. In doing these activities, pupils are learning skills and knowledge that they can use to lead healthy lives outside of the school day and in their future lives.

During lessons, we primarily focus on developing personal qualities such as:

  • Communication,
  • Determination and Resilience,
  • Respect and Tolerance,
  • Responsibility and Leadership,
  • Confidence and Self Esteem, and
  • Motivation.

We also focus on developing:

  • Physical Fitness,
  • Physical Competencies and
  • Cognitive Skills.

Pupils have the opportunity to engage in a range of different activities in a number of different locations. Activities enjoyed by pupils this year include team sports such as football, hockey, rugby, basketball, dodgeball and ultimate frisbee; individual sports such as badminton, tennis, table tennis, golf, boxing, cycling, walking and fitness training and aesthetic activities such as gymnastics, trampolining and ice skating.

What characterises Physical Education at Portland is the amount of Personalisation and Choice that is available to pupils to make sure they are able to engage in and enjoy meaningful physical activity.
