Work Experiences

A number of our pupils – particularly those who will be leaving us this summer – have been engaging in a range of work experience opportunities. These have included mechanics, hairdressing, exhibition stand management and production line working at Tunnocks. (And yes, the two pupils who went to Tunnocks did bring us back some biscuits.)

We are proud of our pupils who have all performed very well – well done everyone.

We are grateful to Mr Hamilton who has organised these worthwhile experiences in Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce.

Christmas Lunch

We had a fantastic Christmas Lunch, prepared by Chef and pupil volunteers: delicious.

We were really proud to present a cheque for£825.40 to St Andrew’s Hospice. Well done to all those who helped raise this sum of money for this very worthwhile cause.

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

School closes at 2:30 on Friday 23rd December and opens again on Monday 9th January.

Parent Information Evening

parents-evening-post-it

A reminder that a Parents’ Information Meeting will take place on Wednesday 16th November from 3 – 5 p.m.
We look forward to meeting with all parents and carers who can attend.

If you cannot attend the meeting but would like feedback on how your pupil is making progress, we can provide a detailed written report or can give you a call to talk about her/him. Please let the school know if you would like this.

Parent/Carer Survey

We would be grateful to the parents and carers in our School Community could complete the surveys via the links below.

We firmly believe that schools and parents should work together to help enhance pupil progress and school improvement. These surveys should help us to look at current practice and will suggest how we might better our levels of engagement and collaboration.

You can find the survey by clicking HERE

Thank You

2016/2017

The new term has begun for or pupils. Whilst the school community is deeply saddened by the sudden passing away of our Depute Head, Mr Neil Thomson, we are heartened by the will of pupils and staff to commemorate Mr Thomson’s time at Portland.
Pupils have come up with a number of suggestions on how best to do this and the Pupil Council will discuss ideas and proposals.
It has already been decided that the annual Citizenship Award will be renamed to honour Mr Thomson’s dedication to our school and will be presented in June 2017 as the ‘Neil Thomson Award for Citizenship’.

Until then, the school year will drive us forward and we send our good wishes to all of our pupils, parents, carers, colleagues and partners in the school community.

In particular, we wish our senior pupils the very best as they prepare for their qualifications.

Announcement

It is with great sadness that we inform the school community and our partners that our Depute Head, Mr Neil Thomson, passed away suddenly whilst at home on Wednesday 27th July.

His funeral is to be held on Tuesday 9th August.

Our heartfelt condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends.

Portland Star

One of our pupils brought us an end-of-term gift: a framed star, made up of words used to describe Portland High School. Of course, we’re very pleased with this gift and pleased that we are defined by:

Trust – Fun – Respect – Loyalty – Laughter – Honesty – Learning – Friends – Memories – Individual

Kind words that come as a reward for all we try to do.

Prizegiving

We’re really looking forward to welcoming parents and carers to our prizegiving this afternoon. It all starts at 1:30 and will be followed by a buffet reception.

As soon as the award recipients are known we’ll publish the details on here, on our Facebook page and our Twitter feed.

It’s difficult, since we’re so excited, but we’re trying to follow this advice.

World Record Attempt – Great British Relay

On 9th June 2016, staff and pupils of Portland High School will take part in the Great British Relay in an attempt to help secure three World Records. As part of a round Britain relay, they will run from Braco to Dunblane – a distance of 12.5 km (7.76 miles). As well as contributing to world record attempts for:

  • longest in duration continuous running event.
  • longest distance hand delivered message and
  • longest game of Chinese Whispers,

we are raising sponsorship for JAPES. JAPES has been set up to buy a modified wheelchair (called a Joëlette) to allow children with mobility challenges and disabilities to be included in popular mass running events.
