Supporting Children with Additional Support Needs Through Play Pedagogy

The Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004 requires all schools to provide appropriate support for children with Additional Support Needs (ASN).  Therefore, educators have a responsibility for providing high-quality learning and teaching that meets the diverse needs of children and young people, ensuring they benefit fully from their education.  In 2021, the Inclusion Ambassadors created a Vision Statement for Additional Support for Learning:

With about a third of children and young people in Scotland recognised as having additional support needs, how can we ensure the Vision Statement for Additional Support for Learning is upheld and their needs are met?

The Curriculum for Excellence aims to provide a coherent, more flexible and enriched curriculum, firmly focused on the needs of the child and young person and is designed to enable them to develop the four capacities.  This, therefore, empowers educators to implement a child-centred pedagogy that supports the development of children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical capacities, which are essential for thriving and flourishing in the 21st century.

Supporting children with ASN through Play Pedagogy can be complex.  This guidance offers reflection and practical advice and support to ensure educators are equipped to provide high-quality learning and teaching that meets the diverse needs of children and young people.
