Play Scotland’s document Play Types Toolkit (2017) exemplifies the work of Bob Hughes (2006) who identifies 16 types of play that children experience and that “engaging in each one is a necessary corollary for a child’s healthy development.” (Hughes, 2006) Practitioners then need to be aware of the different types of play, what they might look like and what kind of opportunities should be provided to allow for these types of play to be experienced.
