Rainbow Learning – Week Three…

Rainbows continue to be a symbol of hope. Hope is one of many emotions – what other emotions are there?

Different emotions are often connected to colours, think of the film Inside Out and how each character represented a different emotion and each character was a different colour… Saddness – Blue, Joy – Yellow, Anger – Red, Disgust – Green and Fear – Purple…

I would like you to draw a heart, you may be feeling lots of different emotions right now, choose a colour for each of these emotions and express how you are feeling inside the drawing of your heart.  Examples can be found here – https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/415105290625952284/

Now focus on the colour red. This is often used to capture feelings of anger. Some people might feel angry and frustrated at this time because they can’t go out and see friends or relatives. You can use these resources on https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zbpv9j6/resources/1 to think about times when you feel angry and try to come up with three strategies to help you calm down.

One of these strategies might be through physical excercise. You could try out some Yoga! We have taken part in Yoga during PE and there are lots on the internet. Here is one which you might like to try –  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM5MGLMNN_E you could also visit the Cosmic Yoga page on Youtube too!

The colour red is also often linked to fire and images of dragons. This week, you could use the book, ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell. Cressida has been reading one chapter of the book each day on https://www.boorg.uk/books-and-reading/have-some-fun/ Don’t worry if you have missed this as the links to the Youtube recordings are available here (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE5MZB5pedUMNJLdgu0wYaSlL0dRLHcU). You may want to listen to the story at your own pace over the week.

Continuing on from this you might want to learn how to draw Toothless and Hiccup with this lesson from Cressida Cowell – https://www.booktrust.org.uk/news-and-features/features/2016/december/drawing-hiccup-and-toothless-from-how-to-train-your-dragon/

Make sure to send me any drawings that you do!

IDL – Water Topic – Lesson 2…

This week we will learn we will use information from maps and atlases to learn where water is and learn about weather patterns…

Here is something I would like you to do first…

On a map of the world (either on the Internet, in a book or by using a globe) can you locate and name the world’s biggest ocean and largest desert?

_________________________________________________________________________________

On this Map of the World can you locate and label the following:-

  • The 7 continents of the world. (colour code these)
  • The 5 major oceans of the world (colour these blue).
  • The polar regions.
  • The desert regions.

Here are some PowerPoints to help you learn more about the areas of the world…

Oceans of the World

Continents of the World

Deserts

The Antarctic

The Arctic

You may choose to research more on these subjects and create a report, poster or your own Powerpoint!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Water has always been important to the human race and many settlements have been made next to rivers – can you think of a significant civilisation who lived closed to one of the longest rivers in the world? (clue – we have learned about them recently!)

Use the following video to write a report on how the Egyptians relied on the River Nile:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z3rwmp3

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A question I would like you to answer – you can send your answers to me on Teams, Mail or Twitter…

How can water be wasted? (Give me examples that you witness in your homes of water being wasted)

Continue to practise your mental maths skills on Sumdog .

Last week HM spent the most time practising his skills in Math with 42 minutes spent online.

The pupil with the highest correct answers was also HM with 284 questions correctly answered!

Well done to you HM!

I will continue to check in each day to see who is achieving the most correct answers and the amount of time being spent on the app. Remember as little as 15 minutes per day can really improve your mental math skills!

VE Day Resources…

Hello Primary 5/4,

As tomorrow, Friday 8th May, is a school holiday and Monday 11th May is an Inservice Day for staff, there will be no learning activities posted until Tuesday 12th May.

Therefore, I thought I would leave you with some VE Day resources for you to complete, if you wish, over the long weekend.

VE Day – or ‘Victory in Europe Day’ – marks the day towards the end of World War Two (WW2) when fighting came to an end.

On 8 May 1945, the Prime Minister at the time Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had come to an end.

To find out more use this article from Newsround: https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/48201749

Tomorrow marks the 75th Anniversary since VE Day making it even more special! Although large gatherings and celebrations have been cancelled due to the coronavirus there are many things still happening to mark the historic occasion.

Here a are some resources to help you learn more about VE Day and some activities for you to complete if you wish!

VE-Day-Information-Powerpoint

VE Day Discussion Worksheet

VE Day Themed Colouring Pages

Simple WW2 Spitfire Glider Activity Paper Craft

Design-a-VE-Day-Medal

Design-a-VE-Day-Teacup

Wartime Recipe Booklet

Remember to send me pictures of anything you complete!

I hope you have a nice weekend!

Take care,

Miss Girvan.

Rainbow Learning – Week Two…

Week Two

HWB

During this time it is important that we look after ourselves – how are you and your family feeling at this time?

This week you might want to try focusing on one worry, if you have any, and work out strategies that can relieve this worry.

These websites might help – https://www.childline.org.uk/toolbox/games/balloon/ or https://www.childline.org.uk/toolbox/calm-zone/

SCIENCE

What do we know about the coronavirus? How does it affect our lungs?

Let’s research how the lungs work? The following websites will help with this and provide a quiz at the end… https://kidshealth.org/en/kids/rsmovhtml?WT.ac=en-k-htbw-main-page-f

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zv9qhyc/articles/zdfs47h

ART & DESIGN

Time for a challenge! Can you design your own set of working lungs??

You will need – straws, three balloons, a clear plastic bottle (e.g. empty juice bottle), cellotape and scissors. Take pictures of your models and share them with me via Teams, Mail or Twitter.

Here are some links to help you with the design… https://schoolscienceexperiments.com/simple-science-experiments-for-class-6-lungs-model/ or https://www.science-scom/breathing-making-a-fake-lung/)

You may now want to use your own working lungs to create some art work using blow painting or bubble painting    – https://artful-kids.com/2012/02/02/paint-with-bubbles-3-ways/

Look at some images of paintings by Jackson Pollock: (https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=jackson%20pollock%20paintings%20images&qs=MM&form=QBIR&sp=1&ghc=1&pq=jackson%20pollock%20paintings&sc=8-25&cvid=1300F016F6984BAAB75FABA659CB2EEC) Can you create your own Pollock using one of the techniques above?

Daniel from our class has completed the challenge – here is his design…

LITERACY

Finally let’s finish with a fun poem. Do you have a favourite poem?

Here is one that I enjoy named – ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if you didn’t have a nose’ by Roger McGoughhttps://i.pinimg.com/736x/85/3b/76/853b761281b7749445ba10c705f338ce–poems-for-children-childrens-books.jpg

I hope you enjoy reading it!

Again I would love to see any of the work you complete based on these activities! Make sure you send them to me via Mail, Microsoft Teams or on Twitter!

IDL – Water Topic – Lesson 1…

Our Term 4 Topic is all about Water…

Here is what we will learn during the topic…

IDL – What we are learning leaflet

This week we will learn what water is…

Here are some questions I would like you to consider first…

How is water used in UK homes? Where do you think the water used in your homes comes from and how is it replaced? How many uses does water have?

_________________________________________________________________________________

There is only a limited amount of water and we, in fact, use the same water over and over again!

This is all part of a process called the Water Cycle. You can learn more about the water cycle here…

https://www.kidzone.ws/water/

Use this website to create a poster or write a report on the Water Cycle.

_________________________________________________________________________________

A question I would like you to answer – you can send your answers to me on Teams, Mail or Twitter…

What forms does water take?

Miss Girvan.
