Rainbow Learning – Week Four…

Following on from last weeks lesson about how author, Cressida Cowell, created Toothless and Hiccup…

(Here are Cole and Harris’s super drawings of Toothless & Hiccup..)

…You now might like to design your own dragon, using whatever materials you choose. You might even want to make a 3D model of your dragon! Include details of your dragon’s special power, its scariness or cute factor, its speed and how you managed to train it! If you wish to use it, a template can be found here – https://www.booktrust.oruk/globalassets/resources/childrens-laureate/2019-21/how-to-train-your-dragon-design-your-own-dragon.pdf

You them may wish to explore a bit more about sound effects and how a book can be brought to life on screen…

The following clip from the makers of ‘How to Train your Dragon’ explain how they did this and the importance of each dragon having its own sound – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN5TOGRs2qg

You may wish to present your dragon to me in a short video presentations – telling me how you made your dragon.

Now we have spent a couple of weeks using this film you may wish to watch it, if you have access to it, and enjoy a family movie night!

IDL – Water Topic – Lesson 3…

This week we will learn how water can be wasted and what happens to used water…

Here are something I would like you to do first…

Watch this video on the “The Human Water Cycle” – discuss the steps in this cycle and the link between water, food and energy.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

It is important that water is not wasted. Use the following PowerPoint/PDF to learn how we can use water responsibly and understand why it is important that we do this.

Wasting Water (PPT)

Wasting Water (PDF)

Now I would like you to list the ways in which water can be wasted at home in your kitchen, bathroom, garden and during other household job.

Is there a way these can be adapted so that we use the water more responsibly? To conserve the precious resource of water, it is important we do all we can to use it responsibly. This means taking little steps to make sure we are not wasting it.

Once you have made your list have a look at the ideas sheet below… Did you have any of these on your list? Which ones do you think you could use at home?

Water – Responsible Use Information Sheet

Here is another useful PowerPoint/PDF which explains some facts and solutions to water usage.

Today billions of people have no choice but to drink dirty water. Thankfully, we’re not one of them. But what if you were?

If you had to wash the dishes with it, bathe in it, drink it – would you? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77Mv8pauMKc

Now we will look at how dirty water can be made useable through filtering…

In this challenge, you will create your own water filter that can turn muddy water into clean useable water!

All information can be found in the following at the following website…

https://science.lovetoknow.com/science-fair-projects/homemade-water-filter-science-project

After making and using your filter I would like you to consider the following questions…

  1. What made the best filter and why?
  2. How could the filter be improved?
  3. What material filtered best and why do you think that is?
  4. Could/would you drink your filtered water and why/why not?

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Make sure to send me photos of your completed filters!

Writing Lesson – Time Capsule…

We are all living through history. This is something we have never experienced in our lifetime. It would be nice to create a keepsake of this moment for you to look back on.

You could save newspapers and art work done, take photos of your days and keep a diary.

Or you could create a paper-based time capsule…

If this is something you would like to create you can use the resource below…

The Wizarding World…

Listen to Daniel Radcliffe Read Harry Potter | Den of Geek
As a Harry Potter fan myself, I am sure you can all imagine how excited I was to receive this email introducing me to the next phase of Harry Potter at Home…
With so many of us still staying at home, they are asking friends from the Wizarding World and beyond to read all seventeen chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for us.
Some of the best-loved faces from global entertainment, music and sport have lent their voices to the story they love by recording videos of themselves reading the timeless first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.Seven of those readers have already been announced: Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe, Stephen Fry, David Beckham, Dakota Fanning, Claudia Kim, Noma Dumezweni, and Eddie Redmayne are amongst the cast of narrators, with more surprises and special appearances from across the Wizarding World and beyond to come. Each will be reading different sections of this iconic book – with its themes of family, friendship, courage and overcoming adversity – to families around the world.Who better to lend their voice to Chapter One than the actor who portrayed Harry in all eight films? Daniel Radcliffe has kindly read the whole of Chapter One of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone‘The Boy Who Lived’, for your viewing and listening pleasure. As the figurehead of the Harry Potter films for so many years, we hope you love watching this incredibly special video of Daniel revisiting Harry’s adventure – this time not on a film set, but through the pages of the first book. While you can watch Daniel’s reading right here, you can also listen in audio form thanks to Spotify, who will be hosting all of our readings on their platform. You can listen via Spotify or Spotify Kids – so parents and carers can enjoy the series with younger fans too.

I myself will look forward to seeing the new narrators every week as they take turns to read different sections of the Philosopher’s Stone, until we reach the end with Chapter Seventeen. Keep an eye out for some very special surprise cameos along the way too!

As you watch Daniel read through ‘The Boy Who Lived’, you’ll notice some amazing artwork interspersed in the experience, thanks to some talented fans. Brilliantly, you yourself can get involved in future chapters, from Chapter Two onwards, so your own pieces can feature alongside our special guest narrators. According to our incredible mathematics skills, you have sixteen chapters remaining of Philosopher’s Stone to work with – so please if you complete one let me know and send in your artistic interpretations of key scenes. You can find out how to do this here.
