Meanwhile a young woman, Hermia, decides to elope with her beloved Lysander rather than her arranged marriage with\u00a0 Demetrius. They are followed into the woods by Demetrius and by Hermia&#8217;s friend, Helena, who is in love with Demetrius.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Oberon, king of the fairies, has quarrelled with his queen, Titania. Fairies were often blamed for things going wrong: people might be enchanted or even killed, babies could be stolen and changelings left instead. This is called a &#8220;play within a play&#8221;. Shakespeare used it to comment on what&#8217;s happening in the main play.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #333399\"><em>Numeracy<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In Act 2, Scene 1, Puck says,<\/p>\n<div class=\"line line-count-176a\" data-linecount=\"176a\">\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;ll put a girdle round about the earth<br \/>\nIn forty minutes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Now, the circumference of the Earth is a touch over 40,000 km. So you can easily work out Puck&#8217;s speed using<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Speed = Distance\/Time<\/p>\n<p>For comparison, the space shuttle has to travel at 28,000 kilometres per hour to remain in orbit.
