The workshop focused on Primary 1 literacy, particularly Cathedral\u2019s approach to teaching phonics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mr Young opened the workshop by talking about Cathedral Primary\u2019s holistic approach to Literacy:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"> a rigorous synthetic phonics programme to give children the tools they need to read and write<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"> the use of decodable reading books during phonics lessons to give children instant success and build their confidence<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"> exposure to non-decodable reading books to develop vocabulary and comprehension<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"> access to \u2018real\u2019 books through regular visits to the school library<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"> daily opportunities for the children to apply their phonics and reading in meaningful ways across the curriculum<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The remainder of the workshop was led by Mrs McCoy who gave a presentation on \u2018Read Write Inc. Phonics\u2019, followed by a live phonics lesson with a group of Primary 2 pupils.
