Online Learning for Primary 5

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you are all well. We are once again entering a ‘new normal’ of online learning, as a class and school community we are all in this together. My aim is to keep things as simple and easy to follow as possible.

Please be assured I know many parents/guardians are working and I am aware many may feel overwhelmed by the concept of online learning, I will do all that I can to make things as simple as I can. I am also aware of the challenges you may all face trying juggle work and online learning.

My expectation of you and your child is “Do what you can, when you can.” I do not want to add more pressure and unrealistic expectations to an already stressful situation.

Please know you can email me to clarify any of the tasks or to find out more information about how to complete activities.

The online learning will be progressive- meaning it will continue with a normal pattern of teaching and learning, which will progress each day/week depending on what and how the pupils are learning and grasping concepts.

I will be posting 2/3 curricular area tasks per day which will be differentiated to suit your child’s current working group.  All activities will be posted at 9am, every day.

The main areas will be Literacy, Numeracy, Health and Wellbeing, and Other- which will be a mix of Topic, RE or other curricular tasks.

I will use a variety of formats to shares tasks and support learning with online games, videos and written tasks.

All tasks will be on MS Teams; I will upload group specific differentiated tasks in the Assignment area of Teams.  There will be tasks for each group Lollipops, Candy and Cookies for literacy and Square, Triangle and Circle for numeracy. Your child knows their group. RE, HWB, topic and other tasks will be for all pupils.

Please upload the task to the assignment area. You should take a photo of your child’s completed task and attach. If you have difficulty, you doing this you can email me your responses directly.

I will provide feedback on tasks uploaded or emailed to me within school hours.

I will be online throughout the school day to answer any questions and hope to have weekly Teams check-ins with the children.  Video is restricted for pupils so this will just be a simple chat to see how everyone is getting on.

Some of my top tips to support ‘online learning’ at home:

  • Establish a routine that works for your family: this can be as flexible as you like to suit your working day or childcare. If you are going to try to create a day similar to the school day, add in break and lunch times to break up the learning.
  • Choose a good place to learn, a dedicated place for ‘online learning’- limit distractions
  • Stay in touch- I am always happy when you reach out and I will be more than happy to support you in whatever way I can. As always you can email directly @ gw09hutchisonmarion@glow.sch.uk
  • Encourage independence: no one expects parents to be full time teachers so encourage your child to lead their own learning. You may have to read the task instructions for your child but allow them to complete it as independently as they can.
  • Begin every day by checking in with me: Each morning I will post a question or quote to encourage participation from your child in the General Channel. Your child can leave a voice note or a typed message. I will check on the General feed throughout the day.

Kind Regards

Ms Hutchison
