February…

Last week we started a new genre for story writing – RECOUNT! We wrote a recount about a trip to the dentist.  Fantastic Mr. Fox started their first novel on Monday and are excited for the challenge!

In Maths we have been learning some more subtraction strategies.  We can now subtract on a number square, number line, with our fingers and we know a quick trick for -9 and – 11.

Last Friday we enjoyed a Burns Supper with room 7 and room 9 to celebrate Robert Burns birthday.  We tried haggis, neeps and tatties!

This afternoon we started our purposeful play for our new topic – Edinburgh.  We had lots of fun learning through play.  Here is a photo of last weeks weekly wonder and some photos of us taking part in purposeful play today.

Gong Hei Fat Choi

Room 8 have enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year.  We completed jigsaws to learn about different celebrations.  We researched some traditions and we tried to complete a chopstick challenge.  Yesterday we created our own Chinese dragons.  We are looking forward to doing some more research next week and learning how to say and write numbers to 10.

A great start to 2019…

Room 8 are back to working very hard again.  We enjoyed our Christmas holiday but we’re glad to see all of our classroom friends.  We are really lucky and excited to have a new friend in our class.  She is really kind and helpful.

In Literacy we wrote some lovely acrostic Winter poems and we shared these with our partners.  We used lots of exciting nouns, verbs and adjectives to describe the season of Winter.

In Maths we started a new topic – SUBTRACTION.  We made a list of subtraction vocabulary and have started using some subtraction strategies.  So far we have tried using a number line and a number square to help us subtract.  We know that numbers get SMALLER when you subtract.

In the afternoons we finished our teeth topic.  We created some imaginative artwork – ‘If I Had Animal Teeth…’ We also made little friendSHIPS and we will deliver these to our friends tomorrow.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas ♪

Room 8 have finishing off our literacy for the Christmas holidays.  Horrid Henry are finishing off their colour band this week and will be ready to begin a new colour after Christmas.  Katie Morag have completed their final novel for this term and have been enjoying a library book this week.  Fantastic Mr. Fox have started reading books from a new colour band and are enjoying the challenge.  We cannot wait to begin our chapter books later in the new year.  We are making excellent progress!

We have now finished looking at 2D and 3D shapes and have started exploring symmetry.  We have been drawing symmetrical patterns, looking for symmetry in the real world and drawing lines symmetry.  It has been really interesting.

Our class have been creating some beautiful winter art to decorate our classroom and corridor.  We have also been practising our Christmas dances with rooms 7, 9 and 12.  We cannot wait for our party on Tuesday.

There were no weekly wonders last week but we did have 2 gold pupils in our classroom.  We could not be prouder of our friends.

One week to go!

Last week in Room 8…

Last week we worked very hard as usual.  It was parents night last week for some of us and we hope you enjoyed looking at our amazing work.  Miss Tham was very proud of everyone in Room 8.  Some of our parents will be attending parents evening tomorrow night.  We are excited to share our success and progress with you!

In Literacy we started a new genre for exciting writing – NARRATIVE.  We focused on SETTING.  This means that we were describing WHERE.  We thought about our senses and used adjectives and similes to describe ‘The Tooth Fairy Kingdom’.

In Maths we continued to learn about our 3D shapes.  We investigated properties of a 3D shape.  We focused on identifying and counting the faces of each shape.

In the afternoons we continued with our teeth topic.  We learned about keeping our teeth happy and healthy and created some artwork to show this.  We made our own tooth fairies, tooth brushes and healthy/ unhealthy teeth.

Well done!

The month of November…

In literacy we finished our instructional writing.  We wrote instructions to help others use sparklers safely and to brush their teeth properly.  We are now ready to revisit the genre of narrative.  We have been focusing on our punctuation.  We have been trying very hard to remember our capital letters and full stops in our daily writing.

In maths we learned to use chimney sums to add big numbers.  We are becoming more confident carrying the sneaky 1.  We have now finished our addition topic and have completed an addition assessment.  Room 8 are now looking at 2D and 3D shapes.

In the afternoons we have been working on our teeth topic.  We can name different types of teeth.  We know that you get 2 sets of teeth – baby teeth and adult teeth.  We usually have 20 baby teeth and 32 adult teeth.

Room 8 are looking forward to sharing our good work with our grown ups at parents night.

Last week in Room 8…

In Literacy we continued with our instructional writing.  We wrote a recipe to help others make Spooky Slime and Creepy Crumble.  To write our recipe we had to think back to the steps we followed during purposeful play.  We have been talking about bossy verbs and time words when writing our instructions.

In Maths we continued with our addition.  We revised some doubles.  Quiz us on these at home tonight with our doubles race track.  We also learned about greedy 9.  We know that 9 is nearly 10 and can use this to help us add on 9 quickly.

In the afternoons we created our own target towers.  We recorded some strengths and some next steps.  Room 8 have been setting our own targets for Maths, Literacy and Health & Wellbeing.  We will be working on these during term 1.

Here is a photo of last weeks Weekly Wonder and a class member who was awarded a gold star today.  Well done to both of you!
