As part of the Social Subjects course in S1 we study two Geography Units:
The first unit is Scotland/ Brazil. Pupils will gain an understanding of the differences between a developed country and a developing country by looking at location, physical landscape, climate, political geography, economic geography, impact of developments on the people and environment and how we can protect the environments.
The second is an introduction to the map skills which will develop their skills for use in geography further up the school.
In map skills we look at how to use an atlas correctly, how to read a map key, know the names and locations of oceans and continents, using latitude and longitude and working out the time differences across the world. In addition to this, pupils will also learn how to use a compass to work out direction, measuring scale as part of numeracy, and using 4 and 6 figure grid references to locate places on an OS map. Skills learned in map skills are a life long tool which will help them throughout their school life in geography.
