S1 – S3

In the lower school, pupils follow a broad general education in line with the principles of Curriculum for Excellence.


S1 Business Education Course
This one period per week course allows pupils to develop ICT,  numeracy, communication and problem solving skills. Pupils study a range of topics:

  • file handling
  • cyber resilience
  • internet safety
  • cash budgeting
  • word processing
  • spreadsheet  and charts
  • ethical issues around technological developments
  • Disneyland Project allows pupils to work in small teams on various activities

 Microsoft Office software  is used throughout the course:

  • PowerPoint
  • Word
  • Excel
  • Publisher

S1 Enterprise Education Course

Pupils study this unit through the vehicle of a joint project (the Healthy Cafe) with the Home Economics Department.  The Home Economics Department will cover topics such as healthy menus, health and safety etc. This allows pupils to develop creativity and decision making skills. The project culminates with pupils running a lunchtime cafe for staff.

Topics studied are:

  • Cafe start up decisions (location, name, finance, business plan)
  • Staff recruitment
  • Advertising
  • Market research

 


S2 Business Education Course
Pupils will further develop their skills during the 2 periods per week that they study business education.  Topics studied:

  • Word Processing/DTP
  • Scratch programming
  • Movie making
  • Accounting (Income Statement and Statement of Financial Position)
  • Financial Awareness (types of bank account, card safety, savings)
  • Band on Tour Project, all the the tasks required to put a band on tour (eg research, booking venues, designing tickets, database, spreadsheet, charting)

In S3 there is some personalisation and choice, so pupils may opt for Accounting and/or Administration & IT.  Pupils continue to build on the skills they have already developed.  Please see individual subjects for information.
