These skills, knowledge and understanding of biology are developed through a variety of approaches and in the context of each of the three main areas of the course. Candidates undertake practical activities in the classroom\/local environment.<br \/>\nCandidates research issues and communicate information related to their findings, which develops skills of scientific literacy.<\/p>\n<p>The course content includes the following areas of biology:<br \/>\n<strong>Unit 1 &#8211; Cell biology<\/strong><br \/>\nThe key areas covered are: cell structure; transport across cell membranes; DNA and the production of proteins; proteins; genetic engineering; respiration.<br \/>\n<strong> Unit 2- Multicellular organisms<\/strong><br \/>\nThe key areas covered are: producing new cells; control and communication; reproduction; variation and inheritance; transport systems \u2014 plants; transport systems \u2014 animals; absorption of materials.<br \/>\n<strong>Unit 3 &#8211; Life on Earth<\/strong><br \/>\nThe key areas covered are: ecosystems; distribution of organisms; photosynthesis; energy in ecosystems; food production; evolution of species.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>The course assessment has two components.<\/u><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Component 1:<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Question Paper<\/em><br \/>\n100 marks during 2 hours and\u00a030 minutes exam<br \/>\n<strong>Component 2:<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Assignment<\/em><br \/>\nA research and written piece of work which is completed under exam conditions within the classroom<br \/>\n20 marks<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Progression<\/strong><br \/>\nOther qualifications in biology\/human<br \/>\nbiology or related areas<br \/>\nFurther study, employment or training<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conditions of Award<\/strong><br \/>\nThe grade awarded is based on the total marks achieved through the question paper and assignment.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>National 5 Candidates develop skills of scientific inquiry, and analytical thinking, along with knowledge and understanding.
