{"id":112,"date":"2015-06-19T09:39:46","date_gmt":"2015-06-19T09:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/nl\/anntest3\/?page_id=112"},"modified":"2024-08-14T09:01:07","modified_gmt":"2024-08-14T09:01:07","slug":"social-studies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/nl\/kildrumps\/social-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Social Studies includes experiences and outcomes in historical and geographical, social, political, economic and business contexts.\u00a0 It is important for children and young people to understand the place where they live and the heritage of their family and community.\u00a0 Through Social Studies, children and young people develop their understanding of the world by learning about other people and their values, in different times, places and circumstances, and how their environment has been shaped. They learn about human achievements and to make sense of changes in society, conflicts and environmental issues. With greater understanding comes the opportunity to influence events by exercising informed and responsible citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Learning through Social Studies enables children and young people to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>broaden their understanding of the world by learning about human activities and achievements in the past and present, political, social and environmental issues, and the values underpinning their own society and other societies<\/li>\n<li>develop the capacity for critical thinking, through accessing, analysing and using information<br \/>\nform their own beliefs and view of the world and develop their understanding of different values, beliefs and cultures<\/li>\n<li>establish firm foundations for lifelong learning and, for some, for further specialised study and careers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Social Studies children learn about the world around them (locally and globally) and develop the understanding, skills and attitudes necessary to interpret it. Children are encouraged to make informed decisions about their own behaviour. \u00a0Positive and caring attitudes are fostered using problem solving, decision making and practical action.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Children are encouraged to learn in a variety of ways; through explanation, enquiry, activity and discussion.\u00a0 They also learn in a variety of settings within and beyond the classroom. Social Studies also provides a context for and brings relevance to learning across the curriculum.\u00a0 Children are taught how to develop enquiry skills in researching, recording, planning and evaluating.<\/p>\n<p>Our programmes of study are devised to ensure balance and progression throughout the school and to ensure an appropriate balance of knowledge and understanding and enquiry skills.\u00a0 Educational visits are arranged, where appropriate, to support learning and teaching in Social Studies.
