Ever since i was little i have always had some obsession with New York. I had always begged my mum to take me with her whenever she left but every time i did she made the same promise. “I will take you to New York before you turn 18”, and she did.
On the 13th of October me and my family left normality behind and boarded our flight to JFK airport. Even though i had seen the New York sky line in almost every movie i had watched i still had no idea of what lay ahead of me.
To get to the city of Manhattan we had to venture throughout Queens. Even just being in the taxi i knew that this was going to be an experience i would never forget. The taxi journey felt ages and with still no sign of the Statue Of Liberty i was almost convinced we were on our way to new jersey.
Over a big bridge and there we were. Navigating our way past huge sky scrapers and an endless supply of hot dog carts. Seeing shops that i have only heard of in the movies such as Tiffany and Bloomingdale right in front of me was very serial.
The minute we arrived we got to our rooms dumped our bags and ventured out into the concrete jungle. Our hotel was on the brightest street I have ever seen. Times Square. It was so different in person. I couldn’t believe it. The business men hurting past, Tourists trying to get the right photo and then there i was looking up amazed.I was absolutely speeches.
Some sites were harder to process than others such as the 9/11 museum. Its something that was very hard to experience. Americans have built a beautiful memorial which is right next to the newest addition, The Freedom Tower. The name says it all the area surrounding is very peaceful with guards always on petrol making sure that everyone is being as respectful as possible. Seeing these things on the news and in person are honestly 2 completely different things.
There is so much I could write, The laughs our lost subway journeys, the food. It was honestly the best experience i have had in my life so far and I am sure i will be venturing into the concrete jungle in the near future.
Collette, what a great post. I feel quite jealous. 😀
This is a great piece of travel writing Collette. The first glimpse of the New York skyline is always a thrill, despite whatever expectations we have from movies and media.
