Room 3 were learning all about Pirates in the final term of Primary 2.
The children researched famous Pirates from the past such as Anne Bonny, Edward Teach ‘Blackbeard’, William Kidd, Henry Morgan and ‘Black Bart’ Bartholomew Roberts.
The children learned about the jobs that the crew did on board a Pirate ship such as the Captain, Quartermaster, Cooper, Boatswain, Carpenter, Cook and Powder Monkey. The children learned what life was like as a Pirate and the reasons people became Pirates.
The children can name all the main parts of a Pirate ship and explain their functions.
As part of our Interdisciplinary Learning play sessions the children dressed up as Pirates and went out to do role play in the Pirate ship out in our playground. They used construction materials to build desert islands, ships and treasure boxes.
In Art and Design lessons the class made their own treasure chests out of shoe boxes. They created old treasure maps. They painted sunsets with silhouettes of ships. The children also painted brightly coloured parrots which were proudly displayed outside our classroom.
All of the class thoroughly enjoyed this topic and learned a lot of new things!
