Primary 1/2

Welcome to our first blog of the new academic year. P1/2 have settled so well into their new class and have worked so well to learn new routines and rules within their new surroundings.

The children are now able to come into class in the morning and organise themselves for learning. They are comfortable within the school building and are continuing to get to know all the school staff.

Within maths, our Counters group have focused on revision. The children have practised their numbers to 20 and are now revising P1 addition and subtraction. After the October holiday we will begin to work on new mathematical concepts. Our Cubes group have been working on numbers 0-10 and have been practising number formation as well as counting objects. The children are working so well to learn these numbers and have enjoyed using cubes, playdough and counters to support their learning.

We have already made good progress within the Active Literacy programme and the children have already learned a wide variety of sounds and new common words. We have been spending lots of time familiarising the children with their magnetic boards and have enjoyed making words using the 5 finger rule; say, make/break, blend, read and write. P1/2 enjoy thinking of words which contain their taught phonemes. The children enjoy reading within their groups and have already learned how to complete a range of Read to Write tasks. The children have began to participate in Taught Writing lessons and one of the highlights of the week is when we choose Star Writers who have met all the targets that Charlie Checker has set (e.g. capital letters, full stops and finger spaces).  Here are some of our Star Writers in September.

After such a long school break, the health and wellbeing of the children is obviously a key priority in class. We have been exploring our emotions through the Emotion Works programme and the children have been developing their emotional literacy. P1/2 enjoyed learning about the Colour Monster story and made their own mini monsters which they use to show how they are feeling on a daily basis.

Within R.E the children have been learning all about prayer. We decided on people we should pray for using our 5 finger prayer. The boys and girls have been working hard to learn their prayers and do so with reverence and love.

This month we have carried out a range of tasks relating to the story ‘The Rainbow Fish’. The children have used this story to think about friendship and what kind of friend they would like to be. They have also explored the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and have completed a variety of tasks. For example, the children have completed a Beginning, Middle and End task and have created their own little pig artwork.
