Deaf Awareness

Children watching the moment one of our pupils implant was turned on and he could hear for the first time.

We currently have 17 children with hearing impairments attending Glencairn Primary.

This year we have a ‘deaf awareness’ pupil voice group who aim to monitor noise levels in the school and promote deaf awareness.  Mrs. Graham and Miss Rooney have been teaching the children their names in sign language and using worksheets with sign language to allow the children to communicate with other people who are also deaf.  They also have guest speakers booked to visit the group.

There is also a playtime club for deaf children.

We also have a base of peripatetic teachers of the deaf who work with children in schools and nurseries throughout North Lanarkshire.
