As a charity the IET are committed to the advancement of science, engineering and technology and to encouraging young people to study the STEM subjects and consider careers within the engineering and technology sectors. The Faraday Challenge Day give our student the opportunity to research, design and make solutions to genuinely tough engineering problems.

All teams were given their brief in which they were asked to choose an area to work on the James Webb Space telescope. The teams were all given some ideas to help with their engineering mission such as working on the ways in which parts of the telescope are transported or focuses light or designing and making a prototype for equipment which may help with the launch of the telescope. Our team decided to design something that would allow the telescope to focus light by moving the hexagonal sections of the primary mirror. The brief itself was rather challenging but our team worked well together to overcome those challenges, they were all very creative, open minded and used their own problem-solving skills to explore their capabilities as engineers.

Although we didn’t walk away as winning team, we are very proud of the work and efforts that went into the Challenge. We certainly have some young engineers in the making here!!
