The entries for the language committee Easter egg design competition were excellent as always and it was difficult to choose this year’s winners. Winning entries were selected by pupils. Wunderbar!

Today we learned a little bit more about the history of World War 2 when a pupil kindly brought in some of her Great Grandpa’s Navy documentation. It was fascinating and pupils couldn’t believe that these documents were almost 80 years old!

Primary 2/3 were delighted today when a pupil brought in a Chinese dragon costume along with some beautiful, traditional Chinese clothing.  With Chinese New Year approaching, pupils have been learning about Chinese culture and traditions associated with Chinese New Year. We also looked at Chinese lanterns, money wallets and fortune cookies and painted our very own dragons.

Thank you very much to everyone for dressing up in the colours of their chosen country. Everyone looked fabulous. Thank you also to the Coop in Muirhead and Stepps and to Marks and Spencers from the Bishopbriggs retail park for providing us with traditional food and drink from Spain, France, Greece, Italy and Germany to try during our European Day of Languages celebration. This was very kind and really appreciated. Food tasting was followed by an assembly where classes performed to one another and also took part in an interhouse quiz.

Congratulations to pupils who were awarded an award for enthusiasm for and commitment to learning languages during a North Lanarkshire language celebration event in June.

Primary 2/3 have been reading German books together, using the illustrations to try to help find meanings of words.  Gut gemacht P2/3!

The Language Committee organised a German teddy bear’s picnic for Primary 1. Pupils tried food from German speaking countries; Germany, Switzerland and Austria.  The Language Committee sang some German songs and played some German games together with the Primary 1 class. The teddies had a great time too and got to take part in all the action! Primary 1/2 will also be having a German teddy bear’s picnic soon. More details to follow.

We were very pleased to invite Ariel the Gaelic story teller along to work with pupils across the school. Pupils took part in Gaelic drama workshops combining drama skills with language skills.

The Language Committee set a ‘Gartcosh German Challenge’ where pupils were asked to find words displayed in local shop windows. We had a fabulous response and were really pleased with how many pupils took part. The winners of the challenge are shown below. Congratulations to Sofia, Brooke and Mya.
