To celebrate World Book Day and to encourage healthy reading habits we have a number of initiatives taking place in school tomorrow.

  • All pupils are being encouraged to bring their favourite book or books to school for a paired, buddy reading time.
  • A costume parade to showcase our favouritebook characters.
  • “Where’s Wally” scavenger word hunt.
  • Lot’s more book related activities ongoing in classes.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Our pupils on our Fairtrade Committee have been very busy behind the scenes, organising our Fairtrade Fun Day on the 8th of March. To raise awareness of Fairtrade , we have been selling a selection of Fairtrade products at tuck shop this week and pupils have also had the opportunity to  win a Fairtrade football, Easter Egg or Fairtrade Hamper as prizes in our raffle.

Pupils are invited to dress down in Fairtrade colours and enjoy, Fairtrade face-painting, Beat the Goalie, a Fairtrade Bake Off competition, Guess the weight of the cake competition and try some Fairtrade Arts and Craft activities. Please support this fantastic event, all we ask is that you bring £1 to school on Thursday.

NLC Reading Quiz

Today some of our senior pupils went to Chryston Cultural Library to take part in this year’s North Lanarkshire Reading Quiz.  Our Primary 6 and 7 representatives did a fantastic job representing our school, competing against other schools from the local area. They have all worked very hard to prepare for today. Congratulations Team Gartcosh!

Euro Quiz Champs!

Six of our Primary 6 pupils are feeling very proud of themselves  after achieving third position (out of over twenty five schools) in the recent North Lanarkshire Euro Quiz!  The pupils  have spent a lot of time researching Europe over the past few months so it was great to see their hard work pay off. Well done! A huge congratulations to our Euro Quiz representatives

Mindfulness with Stan Godek

We were fortunate enough to spend some meditation time with the renowned expert and teacher in Mindfulness techniques, Stan Godek. We worked on visualisation exercises this week to help stimulate our creative and imaginative thinking thus helping to improve our concentration and ability to focus at school.

Pupil Voice Committee

At Gartcosh Primary School we believe that all pupils should have the opportunity to share their ideas and be actively involved in leading their learning – both formally and informally!

To ensure pupils have this opportunity to take on a leadership role within our school and drive forward school improvements, we invited  pupils to apply for a position on our Pupil Voice Committee. Some ideas we asked the pupils to have a think about were:

  • What skills and personal qualities could you bring to the role?
  • How would you seek the opinions of your peers?
  • What special weeks or theme days would we have throughout the year?
  • How would you make our school a better place?

Here are a few photographs of some pupils presenting their speeches during the election process.
