SKILLS FOR LIFE

In North Lanarkshire our Friday afternoons allow all high schools pupils to focus on enhancing their skills as part of a wider curriculum offer. Young people in every school are keen to explore and develop new skills which will help prepare them for life and whatever path they choose.

Pupils at Chryston High School taking part in netball training. Most schools have come together throughout Future Fridays sessions to hold tournaments. This allocated time is helping many sports develop in schools and allowing schools to compete more easily.

Dance competitions have been very popular amongst our pupils from S1-S6. Pupils regularly meet across localities to compete in dance competitions.
Pupils in Cumbernauld Academy have been working on their own clothing brands and bespoke designs. Learning techniques to dye, design and create clothing garments.
Role play sessions have become very popular in schools and pupils in many schools have used Future Fridays slots to build campaigns, create characters and even model their playing areas. Here are some of our dungeon masters from Caldervale High School.

Pupils from Our Lady’s High School, Cumbernauld using time in Future Fridays to learn new arts and crafts skills, knitting some scarves for the colder months. Designed and made by them.
Some of Coatbridge High School’s budding artists took over Summerlee Museum and Heritiage Centre for an afternoon to showcase their work. Many of these pieces, representing Coatbridge through the years were turned into cards and postcards and sold for the months after.
Coatbridge High School pupils learning to play new instruments and helping to teach one another new skills and new songs. There are lots of opportunities across Future Fridays to learn something new.
St Margaret’s High School pupils are keen to explore their music skills from novice to expert. Many pupils attending Future Fridays use this time to develop new skills, learning an instrument, and playing together as part of a band – we may have our very own Coldplay sitting on our doorstep.
Greenfaulds High School students engaged in diamond painting. A very intricate, precise and therapeutic artistic skill. Pupils designing and creating their own masterpieces over a number of weeks.
St Aidan’s High School pupils meet each week to discuss books and texts and also take the time, in a quiet space to read and relax after typical lessons finish on a Friday afternoon. This more relaxed opportunity to come together, share ideas and texts is also helping pupils to develop reading and understanding skills.

Dalziel High School pupils meet each Friday to put on drama performances; planning, writing, designing and producing their own mini shows.

Airdrie Academy pupils learning how to tie lewers for fishing . These sessions helped them build skills to fish independently and also for school events which followed.
