Since returning from the February break children in the annexe have been very busy over the last couple of days.

Outdoors the children have had the opportunity to explore the orchard area of the garden and have been risk assessing their play as they experiment in climbing trees and building dens.

Within the writing area the children are continuing to explore letters and the letters within their names, daily the children have the opportunity to develop their writing skills as the are encouraged to write their name when they sign in. There has been particular focus on the sounds these letters make  and children have been practicing saying these sounds.

We have been focusing on number within the maths area over the last few days and children are becoming confident in identifying numbers 1-10. We have not only been developing skills in identifying the numbers but we have also been forming these numbers in the sand tray and we have been using buttons to let children see quantities.

The children have been exploring a variety of sensory experiences through gloop, water and playdough. Through these experiences children have been using new describing words to talk about how each of the experiences on offer.

Chilldren have been exploring and experimenting with a variety of instruments using these and their voices to re-create a selection of songs and nursery rhymes. In the construction area children have been building their own roads and using a selection of tools and clothing a they do so.

Parking at the Annexe

Can we remind parents/carers when dropping off and collecting children if they could use the official car park across from the nursery entrance.  I am sure you will agree children’s safety is paramount.  Pupils from Braidhurst High School use the safety path and have to cross the roadway to access the Sports Barn.

Thank you for your continued support

Learning in the 3-5’s

The children continue to develop their mathematical skills through games, songs, stories as well as taking part in outdoor play and walks in the local community.  Through environmental walks children have been looking at environmental print identifying letters within their name. Some children recently visited Motherwell Heritage Centre where they learned more about where they live in Scotland while receiving a tour of the Centre.

Children have also been taking part in Kodaly music sessions within the nursery lead by Heather the Kodaly teacher.

Kodaly is a fun way of teaching music to children in supporting them build oral literacy skills through  singing songs and playing musical instruments while developing awareness of  beat, tone, pitch within music .

“Research has shown that children who learn

to play music and sing  are more self-confident,

have higher self-esteem  they also

learn how to get along and achieve a common

goal.”

The children in the toddler room have been participating in our big chef, tiny chef sessions. They have been learning new skills and vocabulary such as spreading, chopping, sprinkling, grating etc whilst making delicious healthy recipes. We have been encouraging the children to help make their own snack in the nursery too. The parents have had fun joining in with our sessions too.
