S6 AMBASSADORS FOR ST ANDREW’S HOSPICE
Our S6 pupils have been working in partnership with Dove Artz in Bothwell since 2014, creating crafts to be sold in the Hospice Shops to raise funds for the hospice. Since 2014, the partnership has expanded considerably, to the extent that the hospice have now made our S6 pupils St. Andrew’s Hospice Ambassadors, working towards a gold award. Christmas time brings great challenges for our team, with numerous upcycling projects going on at once. The S6 have created Christmas bottle lights, from old wine bottles, beautiful pine cone hanging ornaments from, cinnamon bundles, retro scrabble letter tree decorations, stag mason jar tea light holders and reindeer food. On average we raise around £500 yearly through this venture. We have expanded our business recently, by becoming the Hospice Charity Shop liaison team for Motherwell. We collect bags of used items and deliver them to the local shops – this has allowed a fantastic relationship to develop between our S6 and the staff of the Hospice, who have invited the pupils to come and volunteer in the shop. Application forms have been completed already! We have so far delivered 40 bags of clothes etc. Part of our fundraising also involves organising a Christmas movie in school which raises around £60, and all staff participate in donating money to the hospice as an alternative to sending Christmas Cards. On average this raises in excess of £400. The pupils of the school have a real insight into the work of the hospice and have taken ownership of their role in being able to make a difference in the community. As a result of this wonderful work and their contribution, they are also presented for National 3 Volunteering and receive an SQA certificate for their efforts!
