ASD/Communication Support within Firpark Secondary offers specialist support for pupils with language and communication difficulties.
This support consists of specialist teachers, skilled additional support needs assistants, and support from speech and language therapy and other external agencies.
The main work of the department includes.
- Consulting with teachers and providing up-to-date information and advice on how best to support pupils across the curriculum. In addition, teachers are offered a programme of workshops/training to develop their own knowledge and understanding of issues relating to language and communication difficulties
- Working with parents/carers to create a positive home/school partnership through Parent workshops/support groups and regular contact
- Supporting pupils in class and through individual/group sessions and at social times. This is achieved by developing individual profiles and providing pupils with strategies to use within a range of settings/environments. Pupils are provided with visual resources, social skills training, anger management sessions and relaxation therapy
- Supporting the use of AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) in school, home and other environments
- Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide a holistic approach to support pupils.
