The Vikings

We have been learning about the Vikings and have found out lots of interesting facts. Did you know they first invaded Britain in 793?  We have enjoyed learning about Viking homelife,  in particular what they wore and what foods they ate. We investigated the Viking alphabet and we made Viking runes using clay and carved our names on them.

Viking Ships

Our favourite part has been learning about Viking ships. There were different sizes of ships and they could carry between 30 and 60 people.  They built their ships in a very skilled way so they could sail up narrow rivers and survive in the oceans.  Therefore, the Vikings

were excellent carpenters and engineers as well as invaders.

In class we researched the true measurements of a Viking ship then we went outside and used chalk to draw it on the ground.  We made detailed drawings. For our homework task we made 3D models of Viking ships.

Maths Week

This week we have been spending most of our time

on maths activities as it is maths week.  Primary 4’s

focus was weight. We learned some new vocabulary

all about weight such as kilogram and balance.  We

used these words for our spelling tasks. We

completed 4 active maths stations.  For station 1 we

weighed lentils and rice and we ordered food items

from lightest to heaviest.  For station 2 we weighed

classroom objects using balance scales and weights.

The final 2 stations focused on estimation and

calculating specific weights. We enjoyed making

the focaccia bread and we had to use our knowledge

of weight to measure the ingredients accurately.

We also enjoyed the maths quiz and are looking

forward to finding out who the winners are.

During art we recreated Viking sails using repeated

patterns.  We also learned a range of weight facts

such as 1kg=1000g, 3/4= 750g, 1/2kg=500g,

1/4=250g

Fundraiser!

Today Primary 4 took part in a fundraiser to help

raise money for our school.  The money raised will

be spent on us for e.g to help reduce the cost of our

trips.  We were asked to bring sponsor money and

in return we had a fun, sporty day at school.  There

were four stations in the hall and we had PE outside.

The favourite part of our day was the bouncy castle.

We enjoyed wearing our sporty clothes.
