Departmental Aims

In achieving pupil potential, the Support for Learning Department aims to target the four capacities of A Curriculum for Excellence:

  • Successful learners
  • Confident individuals
  • Responsible citizens
  • Effective contributors

In order to develop these capacities we support pupils by adopting the five roles of Support for Learning:

  • Direct Teaching
  • Team Teaching
  • Consultation
  • Differentiation
  • Joint working with outside agencies

We aim to support pupils during their time in Coltness High School by:

  • Early identification and planning for additional support needs
  • Joint agency working, where appropriate, in order to maximise the level of support given
  • Outlining the roles and responsibilities of teachers, school staff and specialist support services
  • Taking account of pupil views and involving them in decisions affecting their learning
  • Establishing positive relationships with parents and involving them in all decisions affecting their child

These aims are underpinned by GIRFEC and Curriculum for Excellence.

What is GIRFEC?

Getting it right for every child and young person is a national policy to help all children and young people grow, develop and reach their full potential. Its focus is to improve outcomes for children and their families based on a shared understanding of their wellbeing.

What does GIRFEC mean for you and your children?

  • You and your children will be fully involved in any processes and decisions which affect you

It enables you to:

  • understand your responsibilities and the responsibility of others in developing your child’s well-being
  • be treated as an individual in a language you understand
  • To access services more easily and be helped in the right way by the right people at the right time
  • Experience positive relationships with practitioners and other adults
