I would like to say a massive thank you to Martin Fraser (Stuarts Dad) and Stephanie from the Ambulance Service for taking the time on their day off to come to Coltness High School and speak to our S3/4/5 Asdan pupils about their roles. They came armed with equipment including a resuscitation Anne, allowing the pupils to get some hands on experience. They were a delight and the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
On Tuesday 27th September our S3 Asdan Group had planned a visit to Greenhead Moss unfortunately the weather said different. However not all was lost as Aileen, NLC park ranger very kindly came to the school to tell us about the history of Greenhead Moss. Thanks Aileen, our pupils thoroughly enjoyed that talk.
The S3 and S4 ASDAN classes enjoyed a visit to the pantomime at Motherwell Civic Centre on Wednesday 9th December. Great fun!
The S3 ASDAN class and staff have been very busy packing shoeboxes and raising money for postage over the past few weeks.
A very special event was the annual French Cafe on Friday 20th November 2015 held for staff at interval.
We managed to send away 195 boxes this year which were collected on Thursday 3rd December,
Thank you to everyone who donated!
On Monday 2nd November, the 3rd Year ASDAN groups will be visiting Greenhead Moss Community Nature Park. It will be a great opportunity to explore the woodlands and wetlands area on the edge of Cambusnethan with a Park Ranger. We will learn about the Country Code, the different wildlife and plants there as well as a few stories about the park’s history.
More information about Greenhead Moss can be found by clicking here
The pupils require suitable footwear for a good walk, a waterproof jacket and a snack. We intend to leave at 9.30 am and return at 12.00 pm.
This activity covers challenge 3A from the Sport & Leisure section of the ASDAN course.
The S3 ASDAN group tried to see the partial solar eclipse this morning at 9.30 am but unfortunately it was a bit too cloudy in Lanarkshire. We had prepared for this rare event by doing some research on what happens during an eclipse and Mrs Bihet explained what was going to happen using a PowerPoint presentation. 95% of the sun was going to look like it was covered by the moon.
It was still quite an exciting lesson because we enjoyed a special Eclipse breakfast of croissants and orange juice whilst watching the build up on television. Sean Batty’s programme on STV was great. We found out what some other Scottish schools were doing and how the Glasgow Science Centre was getting ready.
We made pinhole cameras because we had been advised not to look directly at the sun without special glasses.
When we went out in the playground there were some other classes there already. It was cloudy and cold – brrrr – but after 9.35 am we noticed that the sky had started to brighten and expected it to get a bit warmer.
The bell rang for P2 so off to class we went – but it was an experience to remember as the next partial solar eclipse is not until 2026!
The Shoebox Appeal was a great effort this year again. The Support for Learning pupils and staff worked very hard co-ordinating the project and packed many boxes too. There was an inter-house competition which Arran won with 103 boxes. Altogether, the school managed to send 285 boxes which were delivered to Kosovo this week.
