Scottish Space School

Applications open today for the Scottish Space School. The scheme is open to S5 pupils who are doing highers in maths and a science, and is run with the support of NASA. More details can be found at https://www.strath.ac.uk/engineering/scottishspaceschool/

Several of our pupils have been to Space School in previous years, and really enjoyed it.  One pupil even made it to the final stage at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, where he spent a week with NASA astronauts and engineers. This is astronaut Donald Pettit, who visited Coltness High School as part of the programme.

Mr Miller and Mr Bryson will help you with the application if you are interested.  The deadline is 13th March.

Nuffield Placements – last chance to apply

We posted about Nuffield Placements in October, but the deadline for applications is approaching. We have also heard about some new local opportunities:

  • Power Networks Demonstration Centre, Cumbernauld – engineering and sustainability (3 placements)
  • Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC), East Kilbride
    • Earth Sciences – Ancient climate signals in manganese oxides – a textural and chemical investigation of minerals across Britain
    • Chemistry/ biology – Investigating isotope differences in skate eggs
    • Environmental chemistry – Investigating pollutants
  • University of Stirling – coding to predict disease risk from datasets (6 placements) – travel expenses are paid by the NRP programme
  • Many projects in Glasgow, especially in biology, chemistry and engineering

Speak to Miss Brennan if you are interested in applying. There’s an online information session coming up on Wednesday 22nd February at 4.30pm

Original post:

Higher pupils – would you consider spending some of your holidays next summer doing a Nuffield placement?  We have had great success with these in the past.  In 2018, Aleena Nauman and Allan Goodbrand took part, and Anna Nauman did one in 2019.  Despite the lockdown in 2020, Alex Millar, Ashna Nauman and Areej Tauqir did online projects.  You can read the reports of their projects here:

S2 Options

It’s that time of year again when we help S2 pupils choose their science(s) for next year. All S2 classes have been working on a careers topic this week.

Everyone does at least one science in S3, but if you like science you might do two. If you’re going to be a dentist, a doctor or a vet you will definitely have to choose two sciences.

Here’s the information from the option booklet to help you choose.
