Language and Communication

At Clydeview the development of language and communication is at the core of a  child’s overall development and is therefor a major feature of all curricular activities through either talking, listening, reading, writing or signing. Many of our pupils rely on signs or symbols as alternative or augmentative communication mediums. Within the school we work in conjunction with our colleagues from speech and language therapy to ensure that all our children are provided with the best opportunity available to them to develop their communication skills.

Makaton signing is used widely throughout the school to complement verbal communication and if the need arises provision can also be made for the use of BSL.  Pictorial communication is also used in the school with the Boardmaker system being employed to ensure consistency throughout.

New technologies and ICT are used where appropriate and I-Pads are currently being introduced not only as a communication aid but also as a great learning resource across all curricular areas.

Alongside such augmentative communication language is taught in a more recognised and traditional way within the school with  Jolly Phonics, Oxford Reading Tree and Fuzz Buzz used across all stages of the primary.
