What we have already done
Over the last five years we have been forced to save more than £110million. The budget gap we anticipate – the difference between the money we expect to get and the rising demand for services we have – is more than £68million.
Each service of the council has produced options for savings. We have already made savings of nearly £23million for the next two years. That leaves £49.7million of options from which we have to save £45.6million. Now we’re asking you what you think about these.
Most of these are options to reduce, reconfigure or change services. Some of our options are around themes which apply across the council, like a review of management (where we will reduce senior posts in line with our strategic priorities), a review of advice services (where we will examine all the money advice and external funding we provide) and options for charging for services. We’ll also examine the way we use our buildings and procure the things we need to buy to deliver services.
We have worked hard to reduce the possibility of compulsory redundancy in the last few years, with staff leaving as part of early retirement and voluntary redundancy schemes, and we are determined to adopt this approach again
