Solar System Homework

Primary 5, we have now completed our topic on the Solar System. Can you please note down 3 things that you have learned over the past few weeks that you didn’t know before? Try to think of something really interesting to write. We will look at this on Friday afternoon.

Movie Challenge Winner!

Well done to Charys who won the movie challenge! It was an extremely tight final between Alice in Wonderland and Jurassic Park. After lots of discussion and several votes to reduce the amount of choices, we finally decided on Alice in Wonderland!

Well done to everyone who took the time and effort to post their ideas on the blog. An extra 20 house points and 2 raffle tickets for those of you who posted!

Movie Challenge

Hi Primary 5, I have an interesting challenge for you! Our upcoming art sessions will be the theme of movies.  Can you think of suitable films that we could study and complete various art lessons on this movie. As you all know my favourite film is Beauty and the Beast, although I also love Harry Potter and Maleficent!   I was thinking about various art activities we could complete using these films. The art should be a variety of 2D or 3D art. I’m keeping my ideas a secret for now so get your ‘arty‘ thinking caps on and get posting! I’m really looking forward to your ideas, I’m sure they’ll be amazing.  We will make a final decision at the end of February.

Airdrie Observatory

What a fantastic evening we had at the Observatory! We had the opportunity to see the telescope, how it worked and learn a little about it’s history. The curators believed it was over 140 years old! We then had the chance to look at the moon through the telescope and the binoculars. The children thought it was ‘awesome’ (and I think some of the parents did too). Isobel then gave us a presentation on the Solar System and we learned some new things. It was an extremely successful evening.  I would like to thank all the parents for bringing their children as it really is a fantastic place to visit. I would also like to thank Aileen from Airdrie Astronomical Society for arranging this for us. Here are some of the photos from the evening!

I’m very proud of you all Primary 5, as always, your behaviour was impeccable, you represented our school in a very positive manner! 30 House points to all of you!

Fruity Solar System

We had a variety of sizes of fruits to solve a Solar System problem! First we had to decide which fruit would be which planet according to its size, we then had to place the fruit in its correct position from the sun and finally we had to write some facts about each planet. We used this activity as a group assessment of what we have learned so far. Some groups decided to demonstrate the planets in orbit whilst other laid them in a straight line from the sun.Needless to say, we all passed with flying colours even although no work was the same! Well done again Primary 5! You really are superstars!

After our hard work we decided to snack on the fruit. It was so juicy. As you can see we really had a fun afternoon!
